Communications Intern Regional Office of U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn

Communications Student Internship

Regional Office of U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn, 7th District, Tennessee

Congressman Marsha Blackburn, Representative for Tennessee’s Seventh Congressional District, is offering communications/journalism internships at her federal office in Franklin during the 2018 spring/winter semester, beginning early January.

Congressman Blackburn is in her 8th term as a United States Representative. She is a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, chairs the Communications and Technology Subcommittee, and is a nationally-recognized conservative leader.

This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in public service, politics, communications, public policy, history, or law—but with a heavy focus on communications/journalism. By assisting the Congressman’s district staff, interns have the opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of how a U.S. Congressional Office provides constituent services on a daily basis, as well as how it interacts with those constituents and the community at large. Additionally, interns will observe how the Congressman and her staff serve such a large and diverse district, which includes 19 counties, a major military base, rural, suburban and urban areas, and citizens from a variety of backgrounds. Further, interns will gain valuable experience applying formal course work to real, practical, political problems.

Communications interns will participate in a wide variety of tasks, including:

  • Issue research for weekly newsletter and opinion pieces
  • Citizen research for letters of appreciate/congratulations
  • Work on special audio/video projects
  • Work on social media (Twitter/Instagram/Facebook posts)
  • Placing calls and answering phones

The Franklin office is happy to work with those students who have the opportunity to earn academic credit, and hours are very flexible to accommodate class schedules. Students who intern and work well in the district office are given top priority for interning in the Washington, D.C. office in the future.
