History

The new Belmont University Department of Public Relations is evolved from the Public Relations Program that began in 2004 within the Department of Media Studies. The academic program grew steadily from that time until it surpassed the department in enrollment. Recognition of the academic program by the university as the Department of Public Relations reflects the growth and success of the department.

Success may be measured in many ways, including the career accomplishments of our graduates. Our graduates are working successfully throughout the United States and beyond. Our graduates are working not only throughout middle Tennessee but also in New York City, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Dallas, Orlando, Atlanta, Denver, etc.  Some of our graduates have continued in graduate school in law, public health administration, higher education, mass communication, counseling, nursing. Our students are preparing for public relations careers in international corporations, non profits, higher education, hospitals, entertainment, tourism, the food industry, the banking industry, and public relations firms.

Our students are in demand as interns, with dozens of them placed in public relations internships in Nashville and New York City this semester.  Our graduates are in demand for employment, with some of them receiving multiple employment offers upon graduation. The demand for outstanding public relations graduates will remain high in coming years, according to the U. S. Department of Labor.  Our history is impressive, and our future is bright.
