POSITION: Communications Intern (unpaid)
PROGRAM: Tennessee Office for Refugees

SUPERVISED BY: Grants and Communication Specialist
JOB FUNCTION: Assist TOR with regular communication activities as well as work to achieve larger goals of completing communication project(s) for the community at large.
SAMPLE ACTIVITIES:
1. Identifying information that we can share on our social media pages
2. Assist in preparing presentations, note taking, and technical assistance for statewide meetings
3. Assist with graphic design projects to represent refugee data to internal (partner) audiences, and external (greater public) audiences
4. Photography for internal and external products (newsletters, presentations, year in review)
5. Assisting with gathering individual refugee stories to include in publications
6. Help research, organize and complete a large-scale communications project, such as:
• Video project –create a video series showcasing individual stories of refugee arrivals from
around the world.
• “Items They Brought” an exhibit of items refugee arrival brought with them on the journey to
resettlement
• Illustrated poetry exhibit
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. Must be able to read and write in English. Foreign
language helpful but not required. Must have good general health, a displayed ability to work
independently as well as with other people and be able to accept supervision. All positions require a person who is flexible, has emotional stability and personal integrity who can work effectively and cooperatively with others.
Strong communication (oral and written) skills required; effective interpersonal and communication skills to build relationships; demonstrated interest and/or experience in the field of refugee resettlement; proficient with Microsoft Office applications (graphic design experience/knowledge a plus); high comfort level with internet research and in working with computer systems; must exercise good judgement, courtesy, and tact in dealing with the public (especially refugee clients), and in giving and obtaining information; must be cordial in working under pressure and/or meeting deadlines; ability to follow tasks through to completion; must be able to work well both independently and as part of a team.
