Out of a graduating class of more than 30 majors, the Communication Studies faculty named Corporate Communication and Sport Administration double major, Rachel Boorse as the Mary Etta Cook Communication Studies Graduate of the Year. Boorse was honored at the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences annual awards ceremony on April 12.
The Mary Etta Cook Communication Studies Graduate of the Year Award is named for the founder of the Communication Studies department, Mary Etta Cook. Belmont was fortunate to have Professor Emerita Cook, a cherished teacher and colleague, who dedicated over 30 years of her life to serving the school. The annual award goes to a Corporate Communication, Communication Studies, or Public Advocacy major who excels academically and demonstrates departmental leadership.
Boorse received the award for her perfect 4.0 GPA and contributions to the department and university. In the ceremony, Departmental Chair, Mary Vaughn commented on Rachel’s pristine academic record and engagement with the department, particularly her internships with the Nashville Predators and Nashville Soccer Club, her work as a departmental website and social media manager, and her service on departmental faculty searches. “One of our new faculty members recalled that Rachel made such a strong impression on her when she met with students during the search process. Indeed, Rachel represents the very best of Belmont and of our department, and we will miss her greatly!” Vaughn said.
The award comes with a modest check, and Boorse’s name engraved on a plaque that hangs in the office suite of the Communication Studies department.
Boorse commented, “It’s truly an honor to receive this award. I’m grateful for the communication professors who nominated me and I appreciate the recognition of my achievements, GPA, and leadership.” Boorse’s exceptional leadership skills and academic record will serve her well as she graduates this May and takes the next steps into her future career.
Congratulations Rachel!
