Internship Spotlight: Savannah Newhouse

By: Cameron Fish

Savannah Newhouse is an aspiring Communications Director for the White House in Washington, D.C. This junior Political Science major with a minor in Communication Studies has been given the opportunity this semester to work at Baker Group Strategies. As an associate who aids the communication team, both press and digital, Savannah is in charge of organizing the Letter to the Editor Program. Along with those responsibilities, she drafts social media posts, editorials, and press clips.

The thing that drew Savannah most to this company was the opportunities they offered. Baker Group Strategies is serious about the work they do and serious about equipping their interns with the tools they need to be successful in the future. “One of the most rewarding things from being involved in this company is getting the chance to meet and learn from our nation’s leaders: Senators, Ambassadors, and Congressmen,” Savannah says. “Traveling the state of Tennessee and meeting an array of people from different backgrounds and areas has been a huge advantage.”

Before this internship, Savannah has worked on two prior political campaigns in Tennessee, one for the Governor and one for the Senate. She said this is where she learned the basics of campaign operations. This past summer, Savannah got to learn more about the communication and press side of the industry when she interned at the United States Senate in Washington, D.C.

With having this experience under her belt, Savannah can prepare in a multitude of ways for her dream career. She said she is able to learn the groundwork of how to handle the press and how to successfully manage a political figure’s social media and message. Savannah is so grateful to Baker Group for allowing her to try new things and for giving her the chance to grow. Without their guidance, she would not be as experienced as she has become.

To anyone interested in getting an internship, Savannah says there are a few key things you should know: show the company that you are passionate about the work, be willing to learn, no task is too small, and your work will not go unnoticed if you work hard. Finally, just have fun and enjoy it. From Savannah’s internship, she has gained so much knowledge about political communications that she didn’t know prior and feels more equipped to lead in the real world.

Keep killing it, Savannah Newhouse!
