Meg Barber: Best Buddies at Belmont

By: Natalie Jones

“We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike.” – Maya Angelou. This quote is very important to Meg Barber and to the campus organization that she runs. A Corporate Communications Major and Music Business Minor, Meg has been the president of Best Buddies at Belmont since her freshman year.

According to their mission statement, “Best Buddies International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, and inclusive living for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.” Here at Belmont, students can join as a peer buddy, where they are matched in a one-to-one friendship to an individual with IDD, or they can join as an associate member where they are not placed in a one-to-one match but still attend the events. To Meg, it’s all about focusing on people’s abilities rather than their disabilities. She said she has met so many amazing people during her time with Best Buddies, including her buddy and close friend Rachel. Meg says she will never stop advocating for the equal opportunities of individuals with special abilities.

Next month Best Buddies will be hosting a convocation called “Spread the Word for Inclusion.” Multiple buddies will be sharing their stories and speaking about their personal experiences with inclusion. This event is a great way to show support and learn more about the Best Buddies organization! Plus, well-core credit is included! Be sure to mark your calendars for Friday, March 6th, 10:00 – 10:50 a.m. in JAAC 1034. You can also email belmontbuddies@gmail.com if you wish to learn more about getting involved.

Although Meg loves Best Buddies, she says that she hopes one day there is no longer a need for it. We are so proud of Meg and the organization she runs, and we are grateful to have her as a part of our department.
