Lights, camera, intern! This semester, senior Corporate Communications and Public Relations double major Maya Koziol is interning at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC). She is a public relations intern, immersing herself into the world of performing arts marketing, communications and more.
While beginning an internship can be intimidating, Maya said that she was welcomed in openly on day one and has felt like a true member of the team. All of her ideas are heard, making the company hierarchy much less intimidating. Maya actually mentioned that the most challenging part has been learning to put all of her ideas out there, even though that can be unnerving. Her supervisor has been adamant that all ideas are important.
When asked what a typical day is like at TPAC, Maya said there is no such thing. Every day is different, but some of her tasks include writing press releases, compiling press reports, researching shows and coming up with ideas for press plans. Clearly these are wonderful public relations skills to learn, which Maya said has been one of the best parts of her internship so far.
She has previously interned in public relations, even at the Opera Australia while studying abroad, but said that this internship has solidified her career goals even more. She would love to work in the performing arts after graduation, specifically with public relations and communications.
While she said it’s been fun to see the shows come together and plans be executed, it’s no secret that getting to attend the shows is a major perk. Her favorite show so far? “Dear Evan Hansen,” which may have brought on some tears.
Maya suggests that those interested in interning should apply everywhere that sparks interest but says not to be afraid to decline one if a better opportunity shows up.
“Once you get the internship, work hard every day and take it seriously.”
Interning is an incredible opportunity to learn what you like and what environment you’ll want to work in one day. Even if you have a negative interning experience, it can show you what to steer away from next time. For Maya, interning at TPAC has shined a spotlight on the performing arts industry in her post-grad plans.
