LeDayne McLeese Polaski: Trauma and Racism

This past Monday, the Communication Studies Department hosted LeDayne McLeese Polaski, Executive Director of Baptist Peace Fellowship North America/Bautistas por la Paz (BPFNA), for a convocation talk. BPFNA is world’s largest network of Baptist peacemakers in the world.

Ledayne utilized a frame of trauma to explore where we find ourselves as a country in regard to the issue of racism, and why. Attendees were informed on the cycle of harm created by the trauma of racism, as well as ways to break out of the cycle, and techniques for ensuring our resilience to do this work. This talk offered tactics, such as new language, to understand the work that is necessary to resist succumbing to racist behaviour. Audience members were left with a better understanding of what made such challenging work possible.
