From Corporate Communication major, McKenna Mitchell…
My supervisor at Make-A-Wish Middle Tennessee has informed me that their spring internship application is open, and she asked me to share with other students. As an intern, a student could work in Communications or Program & Volunteer Services, both of which could be very beneficial to other COM students.
As a Program & Volunteer Services Intern, you would be assisting in the planning and implementation of wish granting, executing the volunteer program, and reaching out to various people in the community, such as medical staff, wish families, volunteers, sponsors, etc.
I have been working as the Communications Intern this fall. In this position, I have helped to create and implement social media calendars and a communication strategy. I have spoken with wish families to get updates on how our wish kids are doing and how their wish has impacted their lives. I have also worked a little with graphic design, maintained the chapter’s social media presence, and created blog content.
In each position, you are able to sit in on all staff meetings and attend some wish announcements. The staff is friendly and helpful, and they do well to work with your schedule. As an intern, they provide you with the instruction and tools you need, but also allow you to work independently. This is a great experience for anyone wanting to work in the COM field, but especially awesome for those wanting to gain experience in the nonprofit world!
