This summer, Corporate Communication major, Ella Cox, participated in The Washington Center Academic Internship Program (TWC). Here is her take on the experience…
I first heard about the program my spring semester freshman year when I heard an admissions ambassador was coming to speak. The program is recommended for incoming juniors or seniors so I had a bit of a wait but it was well, well worth it.
Once accepted you get placed with an internship coordinator that chats with you and pairs you with meaningful internship opportunities around the city, which you interview for (typically over the phone). I ended up accepting an offer from Meals on Wheels America, an opportunity I likely wouldn’t have received if not for the help and support from TWC.
In the program, you intern full-time four days a week, leaving most your afternoons, Fridays and weekends free to explore the city, visit potential grad schools, attend networking events and performances and make new friends. Several of the people I met during my time at TWC have become my closest friends. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will forever remain a highlight of my college career. It provided me with irreplaceable work-life experience that helped shape and confirm what it is I look for in a job post-graduation.
If this might be something you could be interested in, or you just want to get some more information, I highly suggest you attend the session on Monday September 25th from 4-5 p.m. in Ayers 2146. I along with a TWC admissions representative will be there to talk about the program and answer any questions you may have!
