Ruta Sepetys was featured as the guest speaker at the Belmont Auxiliary Partners Fall Luncheon on Tuesday, September 26. Sepetys is an internationally acclaimed author of historical fiction whose works have been featured on the New York Times Best Seller List. She joined the Curb College Board of Advisers in 2004, taught within the college for a few semesters and now serves on the Motion Picture Advisory Board.

Pioneering Songwriting Major at Belmont University Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary

Songwriting celebrates its 10 year anniversary with an event held at Ocean Way, Nashville.

Ten years after launching one of the nation’s first undergraduate songwriting majors, Belmont University’s Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business celebrated the pioneering program’s phenomenal success last night with a gathering on Music Row at the acclaimed Ocean Way Nashville studios, which the University owns. One of five programs in the Curb College, songwriting is a highly competitive major that requires a portfolio of original songs as part of the application process. Completed applications are reviewed by faculty and music industry partners. Currently, 260 students on Belmont’s campus are majoring in songwriting.

West, Belmont University Win National Awards from Minority Access, Inc.

Dr. West poses with her Minority Access awards.Belmont University and Vice President & Chief of Staff Dr. Susan West were both recently honored with national diversity and inclusion awards by Minority Access Inc., a national nonprofit organization committed to increasing diversity, decreasing disparities and reducing incidences of environmental injustices. Both awards were presented at the organization’s conference, held recently in Washington D.C..

Belmont Draws 8,080 Students for Fall 2017

Record-breaking enrollment finds University drawing close to its Vision 2020 goal

Belmont’s fall 2017 semester kicked off today with a record-breaking enrollment number for the 17th consecutive year as the University welcomed 8,080 students to the first day of classes, nearly triple the enrollment in 2000. Moreover, Belmont’s sustained and incremental growth is being accomplished through traditional, residential education. As part of its Vision 2020 strategic plan, Belmont aims to hit 8,888 students by the Fall 2020 semester, providing more students than ever the opportunity to embrace the Belmont mission to “engage and transform the world.”

Thousands Enjoy Eclipse Totality on Belmont’s Campus

More than 6,000 free solar eclipse glasses were handed out at Belmont this morning as droves of students, faculty, staff and family members descended upon the campus to experience the once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse with the University community. Transfer student Crystal Rose just started her first year at Belmont, and the eclipse was her first event on campus. She said, “It was a humbling, breathtaking experience, and it was beautiful to see so many people celebrating together.”

Metro Mayor Megan Barry Sends 2,000 New Belmont Students into Nashville to ‘SERVE’

Belmont’s newest Bruins spent the day before classes began for the fall semester serving their new hometown as part of SERVE, the University’s annual orientation service event. More than 2,000 freshmen and transfer students loaded buses across campus and spent the afternoon serving at Nashville public schools and a number of nonprofit organizations across the city including The Red Cross, Project C.U.R.E. and Cottage Cove Ministries, among others.

Students Sweep St. Jude Up ’til Dawn Leadership Awards

Belmont’s Up ’til Dawn team, made up of students from across the university, attended St. Jude’s Collegiate Leadership Seminar last week and brought home three of the nine presented awards. The student group leads, plans and executes Belmont’s Up ’til Dawn fundraiser each year, an opportunity that allows students the chance to stay up all night for childhood cancer. Last year, the group raised more than $113,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and has raised more than $242,000 in the three years since it was first hosted on campus.

Belmont Participates in Teacher Pipeline Coalition

Nashville educators participate in the Teacher Pipeline Project, organized by the Trailblazer Coalition.

Belmont University, in partnership with eight other teacher prep programs across the city, recently formed a coalition focused on the broken teacher pipeline, specifically related to a lack of diversity in Nashville’s teacher workforce. The Trailblazer Coalition completed a year of research and self-analysis on the pipeline, shared its findings and recently held a community discussion to brainstorm ways partners across the city can fix the broken pipeline.

For many college students, “experiential education” translates into internships, study abroad trips, research and other practical, hands-on means of learning. Belmont University certainly offers all of those opportunities, but as part of the University’s vision to be a Christian community of learning and service, Belmont goes a step further. Through University Ministries and academic departments alike, students are presented opportunities to explore and strengthen their faith in meaningful ways through mission trips in the U.S. and abroad.
